The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 4 awarded $850,000 to Charlotte County under the National Estuary Program (CFDA 66.456) to support implementation of the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) for the Coastal and Heartland National Estuary Program. The award, effective October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2030, funds water quality monitoring and assessment activities designed to ensure designated waterbodies meet human use standards for drinking water, shellfish harvesting, swimming, and fishing while maintaining healthy aquatic life and meeting or exceeding water quality standards without degradation of outstanding Florida waters. Key deliverables include comprehensive and coordinated water quality monitoring programs that assess trends in water quality, habitats, and natural resources; coordination of CCMP implementation among state, federal, local agencies, stakeholders, and non-governmental organizations; and monitoring of management conference activities to evaluate effectiveness. The Coastal Charlotte Harbor Monitoring Network, a sub-recipient, will perform monthly water quality sampling in lower Charlotte Harbor through a contract with Lee County, while the Coastal and Heartland NEP program will maintain and develop new information pages on the CHNEP Water Atlas to provide public access to monitoring data.
