Environmental Protection Agency Region 4 awarded $909,800 to Marine Environmental Sciences Consortium (doing business as Dauphin Island Sea Lab) on October 1, 2025, under the National Estuary Program (CFDA 66.456) to support implementation of Alabama's Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan and improve water quality, protect natural habitat and living resources, and support sustainable human uses in the state's estuaries.
The award funds engagement of estuary stakeholders in development and implementation of comprehensive conservation management plans. Deliverables include bay and watershed monitoring with continuous measurement of salinity, temperature, and chlorophyll A to track climate change impacts. Sub-recipients deliver pathogen monitoring programs in Mobile County, stormwater improvements in Three Mile Creek/Lower Chasaw (Gulf Village/Alabama Village), Wolf Bay (Beulah Heights), and General Justice 40 communities, and shoreline resilience activities. Citizens of Alabama are the intended beneficiaries.
