The Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration awarded the Town of Narragansett, Rhode Island a $424,320 project grant under the Economic Adjustment Assistance program on December 20, 2022. The grant funds a wastewater facility expansion study to evaluate and recommend improvements to expand wastewater treatment capacity at Narragansett's Scarborough Treatment Facility. Establishing expanded wastewater treatment capacity is intended to increase regional and national food security by creating a more sustainable seafood supply chain. The current lack of processing capacity has led processors to export squid internationally for processing. Recapturing some of this capacity is expected to enhance the integrity of the food supply chain by reducing dependency on imported processed seafood and re-shoring processing jobs. The study is also intended to chart a path toward a less carbon-intensive supply chain. Once completed, the project aims to bolster job creation and retention and attract private investment to advance regional economic resiliency.
