Description
The illinois sustainable technology center (istc) and the smart energy design assistance center (sedac), units of the university of illinois at urbana-champaign (uiuc), will partner with dupage and kane county, illinois, and other stakeholders to provide direct technical assistance to ten (10) small for and/or non-profit entities, such as restaurants and other food-focused establishments in environmental justice (EJ) and disadvantaged communities. Pollution prevention at food-focused businesses (P2F2B) is expected to achieve significant cost savings and reductions of energy, which will result in CO2 emission reductions; water and hazardous materials use, and the avoidance of creating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from organic source waste reduction. The project team will incorporate all fundamental aspects of proven on-site technical assistance that has consistently achieved project outputs and environmental outcomes in prior funding periods. Community partnerships will be developed between local governments, business and economic development agencies, and industry trade groups to create program awareness and to recruit participating entities for assistance. Overall, this effort will focus on source reduction, resource conservation and utilization, and is aligned with EPA priorities #1, 2, 3 and 4.activities:the following activities to be performed are: task 1: leveraging relationships and outreach. The project team will collaboratively identify and qualify participants through its existing networks and by working with project partners and key stakeholders, such as business association; task 2: on-site opportunity assessments. Once prospects are identified, the project team will conduct an on-site P2 source reduction opportunity assessment; task 3: assessment reporting, measurement, verification, and documentation of P2 results. The project team will use a holistic and collaborative approach to help facilities identify, document, and implement source reduction improvement opportunities; task 4: project report delivery and status meetings. The project team will present their recommendations to business decision-makers, establishing an implementation plan and identifying follow-on assistance needed; tasks 5: technology demonstrations. Where there is interest and need, the project team will assist facilities with locating contractors and suppliers of the identified technology for implementation; as well as provide equipment demonstrations, such as low flow nozzles and sprayers, aqueous ozone cleaning, etc. Task 6: project evaluation and reporting. Three semi-annual progress reports will be submitted to EPA region 5; at the conclusion of the project, environmental measurement data collected throughout the project period will be compiled and the overall project will be evaluated for its effectiveness; and a final report will be submitted that identifies the completed activities, environmental outcomes, and project outputs for the 2-year project period.
