The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded a $500,000 Project Grant through its Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem-Solving (EJCPS) Cooperative Agreement Program (CFDA 66.306) to the New Haven Ecology Project, Inc. (doing business as Common Grounds). The grant funding will support the development of a "Green Job Corps" (GJC) consisting of over 100 high school students from New Haven who will participate in at least 200 paid environmental justice positions. Through the GJC, students will receive training and leadership development to serve as "environmental justice problem solvers," engaging with New Haven residents to address local environmental challenges related to air quality, climate impacts, environmental health, and community resilience. The project will also facilitate community-based environmental justice planning, urban tree canopy expansion, composting efforts, and support for urban agriculture. Additionally, the grant includes sub-awards to the Urban Resources Initiative, NappeSoul, Inc., and Haven's Harvest to provide training and supervision for the youth participants in the GJC program.
