Description

As the agency reported it.

The central vermont solid waste management district (cvswmd) supports the environmental protection agency's (EPA) food recovery hierarchy and its priorities of reducing wasted food at the source, feeding people, feeding animals and finally composting. Public schools serve sensitive populations and are required to follow stringent guidelines to maintain nutritional standards for students. However, misunderstandings of these standards, along with established practices, inadvertently contribute to significant generation of food waste. Food scraps that are landfilled occupy valuable landfill space, cannot be turned into a usable compost product, and produce methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. This project will provide assistance to schools in central vermont to address wasted food at the source (i.e., infrastructure systems including food services and operations), encourage sharing and donating uneaten food, and identify factors that are inhibiting the full diversion of food waste from LAN
