Description

In our domain software practitioners in heliophysics need small workshops to give members of that community space to discuss how to better collaborate how to build on each other's work more efficiently and what best practices and standards those groups wish to adopt to meet those goals. In that vein we propose to coordinate a science software workshop focusing on improving open science practices for mission-related and model-related software development in heliophysics. Attendees are expected to be involved in either mission-related or model-related software in heliophysics at any career stage from a range of specializations in software. This workshop will give attendees a unique opportunity to discuss potential collaborations on software with others across institutions and to give them a place to discuss what best practices and standards would help them collaborate with and build on other's work more efficiently. We complement the data analysis and software in heliophysics (dash) workshop by focusing on two specific software types model-related and mission-related software that will best benefit from such focused conversations and intend those conversations to continue at this year's dash meeting and other related workshops. We are also CO-located with the second of the data systems architecture workshops led by greg lucas on mission-related software (NNH22ZDA001N) at the university of iowa (AUG 12-13) to increase ease of access to those attendees. Since the university of iowa has agreed to provide some accommodations without charge we expect our funding request to be roughly $80K which will cover the time of committee members in need of funding for this effort travel honoraria for session facilitators and the logistics of the meeting not covered by the university of iowa.
