About this award

The Alabama State Department of Education received a $22.1 million Formula Grant from the Department of Education's Office of Elementary and Secondary Education under the Student Support and Academic Enrichment Program (CFDA 84.424) for the performance period July 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026. This grant funds three core service categories designed to expand student academic achievement and school capacity: providing access to well-rounded education; improving school conditions for student learning; and enhancing technology utilization to advance academic achievement and digital literacy. The award supports academic enrichment programs, professional development for educators, technology infrastructure upgrades, school safety initiatives, and mental health support services delivered across Alabama's K-12 educational system.

The State Department of Education distributed these funds as pass-through grants to 67 local educational agencies (LEAs), charter schools, and educational organizations across Alabama. Sub-awardees, including school districts in Tuscaloosa, Fairfield, Clay County, Coffee County, and numerous other counties and municipalities, utilize the funding to implement comprehensive student support initiatives. Services delivered through sub-awards include improving conditions for learning through school safety enhancements and mental health supports; expanding access to well-rounded curricula including STEM, arts, and career and technical education; integrating technology for digital literacy and academic achievement; and supporting professional development for educators. The formula grant mechanism ensures equitable distribution of federal resources to all eligible LEAs based on student population and other statutory criteria, enabling schools and communities throughout the state to enhance educational capacity and student outcomes.
