About this award

The Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction received a $21.3 million Formula Grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Elementary and Secondary Education under the Twenty-First Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) program (CFDA 84.287), effective July 1, 2025, through September 30, 2026. The 21st CCLC program establishes and expands community learning centers that provide academic enrichment and developmental services to school-aged children, particularly those attending high-poverty and low-performing schools. Services delivered through funded centers include tutoring, homework assistance, mentoring, academic enrichment in core subjects such as reading and math, and a broad array of extracurricular activities in arts, music, sports, and cultural areas operating outside regular school hours to supplement in-school instruction.

As the primary recipient and pass-through entity, the Superintendent of Public Instruction distributed sub-awards to 44 implementing organizations across Washington State, including local school districts (Renton, Walla Walla, Sunnyside, Wapato, Othello), educational service districts (ESD 105, ESD 112, ESD 123, Puget Sound ESD), nonprofit organizations specializing in youth development (Washington Alliance for Better Schools, Boys & Girls Clubs chapters, Northwest Learning & Achievement Group, Together), and community-based entities (Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic, Lopez Island Family Resource Center). Sub-awards were distributed across multiple funding cohorts (Cohort 18 Year 4, Cohort 19 Year 3, and Cohort 20 Year 1) between September 2025 and February 2026, with sub-grantees providing community learning center programming and academic support services to underserved student populations throughout the state.
