The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Salish Kootenai College, Inc. $170,406 under the Cooperative Forestry Research program (CFDA 10.202) on October 1, 2025, for a formula grant through September 30, 2027.
The project will conduct experimental treatments to understand white bark pine regenerative response and planting success across a range of overstory and understory conditions. Research is carried out in cooperation with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Forestry Division, which actively manages mid-elevation white bark pine stands. Matching funds are provided by Salish Kootenai College and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes.
Work is performed in Pablo, Montana. The Cooperative Forestry Research program (McIntire-Stennis) supports forestry research in forest production, utilization, and protection, and trains forestry scientists through eligible institutions within participating states as designated by the Governor or their designee.
