About this award

The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Washington $1,171,318 under the Cooperative Forestry Research program (CFDA 10.202) on October 1, 2025, for forestry research and graduate education in support of the McIntire-Stennis Cooperative Forestry Act.

The award funds forestry research and graduate training delivered through the University of Washington School of Environmental and Forest Sciences. The School competitively awards projects to faculty members, with selection focused on research with long-term positive effects on forests and natural resources nationwide. Research areas currently supported include analysis of forest ecosystems, management of threatened and endangered mammalian species on human-altered landscapes, remote sensing to monitor soil moisture levels, and ecological restoration approaches. Funded research provides direct support for specific projects or indirect administrative support for forest-related research activities, with graduate student training embedded throughout the research portfolio.

The award runs from October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2027, with place of performance in Seattle, Washington. The University of Washington, through its Office of Sponsored Programs, serves as the recipient organization. This represents the 64th consecutive year of McIntire-Stennis funding to the University of Washington, with award amounts determined by a formula incorporating data points including the level of activity in the state's timber industry.

These are formula funds; a variety of data points, including the level of activity in the state's timber industry, determine the annual amount that our university receives. Recipients can use this funding as direct support for specific research projects or indirectly to provide administrative support for forest-related research. Areas currently supported include analysis of forest ecosystems; management of threatened and endangered mammalian species on human-altered landscapes; remote sensing to monitor soil moisture levels; and novel approaches to ecological restoration. The UW school of environmental and forest sciences awards new projects competitively to members of its faculty. Its research committee selects principal investigators with a goal of encouraging highly impactful research that will provide training opportunities for graduate students and have a long-term, positive effect on forests and natural resources nationwide.
