Description

They can provide various uses while providing social, economic, and environmental benefits. Specifically, forest watersheds provide for a wealth of provisioning, regulating, and sustaining ecosystem services and are a negligible contributor to non-point source pollution and causes of stream impairment. The forested landscape in the nation faces immense challenges that demand scientific investigations to provide appropriate solutions to these challenges. The challenges include climate change, sustainability, land use pressure, proper forest management practices, social factors, and wildfires. Alabama is the fifth most forested state in the united states, with an estimated 23,069 ,432 acres of forest land, accounting for 71% of the total land area. Alabama's forest industry job concentration is 2.57 times the national job concentration and ranked 3RD nationally in the forest products sector's contribution to the state economy. Family owners control 71% of the private forestland. Minority landowners represent a relatively small proportion of forest landowners and forestland (4.2% and 1.4%, respectively). Forestland occupies a significant part of the minority farmer landscape, often representing half or more agricultural land. However, only 3% of owners across the south have a management plan. There is a need to develop sustainable and best practices for forest management alternatives for limited resource landowners in the black belt region by exploring and presenting potential income streams for these landowners while providing a platform for enhanced research, education, and outreach for students and stakeholders. Managing for multiple uses can range from timber production to managing wildlife habitat and associated recreation activities, e.g., wild game hunting. These uses also include water resources, soil health, and other services. Further, managing for multiple uses less conventionally may take the form of agroforestry schemes that produce highquality timber while providing agricultural products or opportunities to forage for non-timber forest products. Forest systems are multi-functional and capable of supplying various services and outputs. Yet, limited resource landowners typically have scant knowledge of either the operational requirements for maximizing these opportunities or the financial and economic benefits associated with their lands. Our efforts are therefore focused on developing research programs that address the needs of this segment of the forest and landowners. Specifically, we will research advancing sustainability and profitability for small-scale under-represented minority forestry landowners, sustainable forest management and recreational use for limited resource landowners in the black belt region and enhancing the grazing and feeding opportunity for livestock by expanding silvopasture and woodland-grazing practices for limited resource forest landowners in alabama black belt region.
