Description

Projects continuing from previous years include research in the following areas: a second phase of a previously funded project on hydrologic and vegetation response of montane meadow restoration; and assessing the effectiveness, risks and opportunities associated with forest carbon offset projects in western forests. New projects this year include research in the following areas: evaluating specific biological control treatments for hererobasidion root disease and forest management approaches for mitigating wildfire and tree mortality from sudden OAK death; examining fuel treatments across central californian chaparral and eastern sierra nevada forest; and monitoring soil moisture storage and groundwater recharge in a post-fire environment. Four legislatively mandated areas are covered by our mcintire-stennis program: (1) protection of forest land and resources against fire, insects, diseases, or other destructive agents, (2) development of sound policies for the management of forest lands and the harvesting and marketing of forest products, (3) management of forest and related watershed lands to improve conditions of water flow and to protect resources against floods and erosion, and (4) management or forest lands for outdoor recreation. Matching funds SRE largely state-funded research grants.
