Description
- Purpose
- The purpose of this award is to provide one-year funding for the project entitled montachusett RTA micro-transit service . This was for an award made by the mapc to mart under their community connections program. This project will bring on-demand micro-transit services to four of marts member communities without fixed-route services that LIE within the boston MPO UZA: bolton boxborough littleton and stow.
- Activities
- Funds will be used to provide operating assistance supporting on-demand micro-transit services in four communities including associated technology and to fund third-party micro-transit management and marketing activities. Mart will use software developed by its technology partner to match riders with rides. Complementary ADA paratransit service will be available for eligible riders.
- Expected outcomes
- This project will provide the public with more safe affordable and environmentally friendly transportation alternatives. This type of service will allow community members to book on-demand shared rides that will pick them up and drop them off at their desired locations offering greater flexibility. With a mean travel time to work of 35 minutes and no public transportation options these current trips are likely only possible by single occupancy vehicles (sovs). Public options reduce the number of sovs on the road and thus improve air quality for those communities.
- Intended beneficiaries
- Those who currently drive to work alone will benefit from a larger variety of transportation options. Drivers of sovs can save money (gas parking costs vehicle maintenance insurance premium discounts etc.) by using on-demand micro-transit while also reducing personal vehicle miles traveled (VMT). Employers may offer incentives to employees to use this service which also helps to create a more reliable workforce. The communities will benefit from better air quality. Mart benefits by growing ridership.
