MUCH OF ARKANSAS NATIVE WOODLANDS HAVE BEEN LOST AND THE REMAINING AREAS ARE THREATENED WITH HABITAT CONVERSION FRAGMENTATION ALTERED FIRE REGIMES AND INVASIVE PLANT ENCROACHMENT. THIS PROJECT WILL RESTORE A 361 ACRE WOODLAND TRACT WITHIN A TIER I CONSERVATION OPPORTUNITY AREA IN THE ARKANSAS RIVER VALLEY PRAIRIES CONSERVATION OPPORTUNITY AREA. HISTORICALLY THIS AREA WAS MAINTAINED UTILIZING PRESCRIBED FIRE AND FIRES IGNITED WHILE CONDUCTING MILITARY TRAINING EXERCISES. FIRE ON THIS LANDSCAPE HAS DECREASED IN THE LAST FEW DECADES AS WARFARE TRAINING EXERCISES TRANSITIONED FROM A RURAL LANDSCAPE TO A MORE URBAN ENVIRONMENT.
