Description
As the designated trustee of the state's wildlife resources, alaska department of fish & game (ADF & g) holds all wildlife, including amphibians, birds, and mammals (game and nongame), in trust for the benefit of the people of alaska. In keeping with the agency's mission, ADF & g uses federal funds provided to all states via the state wildlife grant (SWG) program to manage and conserve wildlife and their habitats, including species that are not hunted or fished. SWG funds allow alaska to proactively address research, management, and conservation needs that ultimately prevent species from becoming listed as threatened or endangered under the endangered species act (ESA) and address federal actions and recovery efforts of existing ESA-listed species. ADF & g's threatened, endangered, and diversity program (TED) implements the state wildlife action plan (swap) and thereby reflects the broad range of benefits and values that alaskan's desire from all of the state's wildlife resources. The overarching goal of the TED program is to support research and understanding of species that have a real or perceived conservation concern and to take actions to prevent species from being listed as federally threatened or endangered. Results of our applied research are used by managers and policy makers to better understand the severity of a species' decline, identify the cause(s) of a decline, and identify conservation and management actions to reverse a decline. The 14 projects proactively address a specific, high priority research or monitoring topic on species in steep decline or currently listed under the ESA, including 7 research projects focused on single sgcns, including 5 bird species, 5 multi-species, long-term sgcn monitoring projects, and 1 coordination and planning project that provides funding for operational, administrative, and coordination expenses of the program not clearly associated with individual research and monitoring projects.
