About this award

The Federal Transit Administration awarded the California Public Utilities Commission $9.357 million on June 9, 2026, under the Rail Fixed Guideway Public Transportation System State Safety Oversight Formula Grant Program (CFDA 20.528) to reimburse California for up to 80 percent of its state safety oversight program costs.

The award funds continuation of state safety oversight activities mandated under 49 CFR Part 674 for FTA-funded rail fixed guideway public transportation systems in California, including both operational and administrative expenses. Activities encompass staff, training, consultant services for accident investigations, and information systems management. The expected outcomes are improved safety and compliance across all California rail fixed guideway systems not regulated by the Federal Railroad Administration, including light rail, heavy rail, rapid rail, monorail, inclined plane, funicular, and automated guideway systems. Beneficiaries include passengers and employees of these systems, all California residents who interact with them, and state taxpayers.

The period of performance runs through September 30, 2031, with all work performed in California. No subrecipients are involved; the California Public Utilities Commission delivers the work directly to the Federal Transit Administration. This is a formula grant, funded through annual congressional appropriation and awarded as a separate grant agreement for each fiscal year.
