The Department of Housing and Urban Development Public and Indian Housing Office awarded $584,670 to the Housing Authority of the County of Marin on January 1, 2026 under the Public Housing Operating Fund (CFDA 14.850), a formula grant program providing operating subsidies to housing authorities to fund day-to-day operational and maintenance expenses for public housing.
Operating funds support management and operations, routine and preventative maintenance, anti-crime and security activities, energy costs, resident supportive services, insurance, debt service, and administrative program implementation expenses that public housing agencies are required to undertake under the Housing Act of 1937 and program regulations. The funding also covers operating costs for privately owned public housing units within mixed-finance projects and Turnkey III projects under final lease purchase agreements. The program provides web-based platforms enabling housing authorities to access real-time data on funding levels, occupancy rates, and families served.
The award funds operations serving residents in San Rafael, California through December 31, 2030. The Public Housing Operating Fund serves approximately 6,000 housing authorities nationwide, with an authorized program total of $5 billion supporting 1,590,321 public housing residents in 902,436 households, of which 44 percent are elderly and 35 percent include children.
