About this award
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the Traffic Safety Commission $686,444.37 on October 1, 2025, under the Section 405(g) Nonmotorized Safety Grant program (CFDA 20.616, National Priority Safety Programs).
The grant funds programs to decrease nonmotorized road user fatalities involving motor vehicles on trafficways in Washington State. Funding supports countermeasure strategies and projects identified in the Traffic Safety Commission's approved triennial highway safety plan and annual grant application, targeting crash, injury, and fatality reduction. The Traffic Safety Commission, based in Olympia, Washington, is Washington's designated State Highway Safety Office and administers this federal funding to implement nonmotorized safety initiatives including pedestrian and bicycle safety programs.
The award qualifies Washington under statutory criteria: the state's annual combined nonmotorized road user fatalities exceed 15 percent of total annual crash fatalities as determined by NHTSA using the most recent calendar year final FARS data. Funds are apportioned using the statutory formula and distributed based on the approved highway safety plan detailing problem identification, public participation, performance measures, and countermeasure programming strategies.
The period of performance runs from October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2029. The federal share is reimbursed on claims submitted in vouchers covering incurred costs. The Traffic Safety Commission retains records for three years following submission of final expenditure reports and project deliverables pending audit resolution.
