About this award
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the Department of Motor Vehicles New York State (operating as the Governors Traffic Safety Committee) $1,875,036.31 on October 1, 2025, under the Section 405(G) Nonmotorized Safety Grant program to support initiatives decreasing nonmotorized road user fatalities involving motor vehicles.
The award funds programs and countermeasure strategies detailed in New York State's approved triennial highway safety plan and annual grant application. Eligible activities target crashes, injuries, and fatalities resulting from motor vehicle collisions with nonmotorized road users on trafficways. New York qualified for this funding because the state's annual combined nonmotorized road user fatalities exceed 15 percent of total annual crash fatalities, as determined by NHTSA using the most recent calendar year final FARS data available.
The award period runs through September 30, 2029, with place of performance in Albany, New York. The grant is structured as a formula award apportioned under statutory formula to qualifying states and provided to state and territorial highway safety offices. NHTSA will reimburse the federal share on vouchers submitted by the recipient covering incurred costs. The Governors Traffic Safety Committee distributes substantial sub-awards to county health departments, academic institutions, courts, law enforcement agencies, nonprofits, and research entities to execute the statewide highway safety mission across New York State.
