About this award
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the Public Safety South Carolina Department (Office of Justice Programs) $2,680,211.20 on October 1, 2025, under the Section 405(d) Impaired Driving Countermeasures Grant, a formula grant component of the National Priority Safety Programs (CFDA 20.616).
The award funds impaired driving countermeasures across South Carolina through a network of state and local sub-recipients performing enforcement, prosecution, victim advocacy, and court monitoring activities. Sub-recipients include law enforcement agencies—Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, the towns of Moncks Corner and Summerville, the City of North Augusta, the City of Goose Creek, and York County Sheriff's Office—which deploy dedicated DUI enforcement officers and deputies to target impaired driving through increased arrests and citations. Prosecutorial capacity is strengthened through assistant solicitors and special DUI prosecutors in the 11th Circuit Solicitor's Office (serving Edgefield, Lexington, Saluda, and McCormick counties), the Sixth Judicial Circuit Solicitor's Office (Chester and Lancaster counties), the Town of Summerville, and the City of Goose Creek, all working to adjudicate pending DUI cases and reduce backlogs. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) operates a court monitoring program recording DUI case data in the nine South Carolina counties with the highest rates of fatal and severe injury DUI collisions, generating reports, building partnerships, and conducting media and awareness campaigns.
Period of performance runs through September 30, 2029, with place of performance in Blythewood, South Carolina. The award is apportioned under statutory formula and distributed based on the state's approved triennial highway safety plan and annual grant application, with funding directed toward reducing crashes, injuries, and fatalities from motor vehicle crashes.
