About this award

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the Michigan Department of State Police $6,133,972.79 on October 1, 2025, under the Section 405(d) Impaired Driving Countermeasures Grant program (CFDA 20.616, National Priority Safety Programs), with period of performance through September 30, 2029.

The award funds impaired driving countermeasures including adoption and enforcement of mandatory alcohol-ignition interlock laws and 24/7 sobriety programs. Work is performed in Lansing, Michigan. Funding is apportioned by statutory formula and applied against an approved triennial highway safety plan and annual grant application detailing countermeasure strategies to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities from motor vehicle crashes.

The recipient passed funding to three sub-recipients. The Judiciary Courts of the State of Michigan received allocations for two distinct sub-awards: one supporting a State Judicial Outreach Liaison to provide training and technical assistance on impaired driving issues, including ignition interlocks and cannabis-related impairment, to trial courts statewide; and a second supporting Driving While Impaired and Hybrid DWI/Drug court programs through subgrants to eligible courts and contractual and travel costs for operational court programs and in-state travel to approved trainings. The University of Michigan's Office of Research and Sponsored Projects received funding to conduct 10-year trends analysis on alcohol and drug-involved driving crashes combined with special topics analysis—including hot spot and non-motorist analysis—to inform enforcement and education campaigns and develop additional countermeasures to reduce impaired driving crashes in Michigan.

The federal share is reimbursed on vouchers for costs incurred and converted to electronic transfer of funds.
