About this award

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) received a $343,906.60 Formula Grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (CFDA 20.616 National Priority Safety Programs) to support enforcement of the state's laws applicable to pedestrian and bicycle safety. The grant provides funding for law enforcement training, enforcement mobilizations, public education campaigns, and other initiatives aimed at reducing crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving non-motorized road users. This multi-year grant, which runs from October 2023 through September 2027, enables PennDOT to deliver services to local communities across Pennsylvania to promote highway safety and protect vulnerable road users.

PennDOT has sub-awarded portions of this grant to various local government entities in Pennsylvania, including county and municipal police departments, to carry out highway safety enforcement activities within their jurisdictions. These sub-awards, which range from $25,000 to $75,000, fund overtime for increased patrols, traffic stops, sobriety checkpoints, and other enforcement operations, as well as public outreach campaigns to educate pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists on safe practices.

Description

Section 405(g) nonmotorized safety grant (23 C.F.R. & 1300.26; 23 U.S.C. & 405(g)) - grant to support enforcement of the state's laws applicable to pedestrian and bicycle safety through law enforcement training, enforcement mobilizations and campaigns, and public education and awareness programs. 405(g) funding is available to qualifying states where the state's annual combined nonmotorized road user fatalities exceed 15 percent of the state's total annual crash fatalities based on the most recent calendar year for which final fars data are available, as determined by nhtsa. These funds are apportioned using statutory apportionment formula. These funds are provided to the state and territorial highway safety offices based on an approved triennial highway safety plan that details problem identification, public participation and engagement, performance measures, countermeasure strategies for programming funds and an approved annual grant application that details planned projects using identified countermeasure strategies for programming funds to help reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities resulting from motor vehicle crashes.
