About this award

This federal Formula Grant award from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under the National Priority Safety Programs (CFDA 20.616) provides $421,671.98 in funding to the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) to support the state's alcohol-impaired driving countermeasures programs. The grant supports initiatives focused on data-driven problem identification, public engagement, performance measurement, and implementation of evidence-based strategies to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities resulting from impaired driving.

As part of this award, MDT will leverage the funding for projects delivered in partnership with state and local agencies, such as providing training for the Judiciary Courts of Montana to enhance DUI/DWI treatment courts and services. The Blackfeet Tribe, Northern Cheyenne Tribe, Chippewa Cree Tribe, and Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes will also receive sub-awards to implement tribal-focused road safety education and enforcement programs under the "SOAR - Safe on All Roads" initiative. The Montana Department of Justice's Highway Patrol Division will manage additional sub-awards for 24/7 sobriety programs, traffic safety resource officers, and other traffic safety enforcement activities. This Formula Grant award supports a range of statewide and community-based efforts to address impaired driving, a key highway safety priority identified by Congress.
