About this award

The Federal Highway Administration awarded the California Department of Transportation $388,888 on March 16, 2026, under the Promoting Resilient Operations for Transformative, Efficient, and Cost-Saving Transportation (PROTECT) program to rehabilitate subsurface culvert infrastructure serving Aquatic Park's lagoon system in San Francisco.

The work includes rehabilitation of five existing tide tubes that serve Aquatic Park's main lagoon and two interconnecting tubes between the main lagoon and Model Yacht Basin, plus one existing tide tube between the Model Yacht Basin and San Francisco Bay. Dredging will be performed at the tide tube openings at the main lagoon and Model Yacht Basin to provide unimpeded flow. The project will fortify shoreline outfall structures on the San Francisco Bay side to boost the culverts' resiliency to increased tidal impacts of climate change.

Work is performed in California and runs through June 30, 2029. Caltrans, operating as California's state transportation authority, receives the award as a formula grant recipient and implements the project on behalf of FHWA.
