About this award
The Federal Highway Administration awarded the Michigan Department of Transportation $2,293,353 on December 17, 2025, under the Surface Transportation Block Grant Program (CFDA 20.287) to reconstruct Charlevoix Street from Alter Road to Beaconsfield Avenue in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan.
The project creates consistent 8-foot sidewalks and crosswalks throughout the corridor, reconstructed with standard concrete pavement. Existing streetlighting, trees, and obstructions are relocated or replaced closer to the roadway. The resulting cross-section accommodates two 8-foot sidewalks, two 3-foot amenity zones, two 8-foot parking lanes with valley gutter, and two 11-foot vehicle travel lanes across a 60-foot right-of-way. A detectable warning edge using colored brick cobblestones differentiates the pedestrian space from the parking area, with bollards, landscape planters, and bioretention islands providing additional delineation and accessibility features conforming to US Access Board guidelines. Crosswalks include extensions and bump-outs to shorten crossing distances and improve sight lines. The project incorporates pedestrian-level lighting, landscaping, street furnishings (bike racks, benches, litter receptacles), and shared-lane markings and bike route signage to encourage bicyclist use. Performance spans from the award date through May 28, 2032.
Description
- Project description
- Performed in coordination with road rehabilitationwork, this project creates consistent 8' sidewalks and crosswalks throughout the corridor. Sidewalks will be reconstructed with standard concrete pavement. Existing streetlighting, trees, and other obstructions will be relocated (or replaced with new items) closer to the roadway. As part of the road project, the vehicular travel lanes will be reduced by one foot in each direction. The resulting cross-section will be two 8' sidewalks, two 3' amenity zones, two 8' parking lanes with valley gutter, and two 1' vehicle travel lanes for a total of 60 feet of row. The proposed project includes the removal of the curb throughout the corridor, resulting in a curbless street. A detectable warning edge, in the form of colored, brick cobble stones along the roadside of the pedestrian area will differentiate the pedestrian space from the parking area. The detectable area is designed to provide a visual and tactile CUE to visually impaired pedestrians that the sidewalk has ended. In addition, the use of bollards, landscape planters, and bioretention islands will help differentiate the sidewalk from the parking area and roadway. Bioretention areas will have edge protection conforming with the US access board guidelines. Crosswalks will also be enhanced with extensions/bump-outs to shorten crossing distances and improve visibility between pedestrians and motorists. These areas also allow enough space for the provision of raingardens. The project will also include additional pedestrian-level lighting, landscaping, and street furnishings including bike racks, benches, and litter receptacles.for bicyclist safety, shared-lane markings, bike route signage, and prominent bike parking will serve as visual cues for drivers that bicyclists are welcome to use the existing travel lane for their usage. The project will also coordinate with smart bus service to improve boardings and alighting areas as part of the design. Charlevoix street, from
