About this award

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) awarded Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) a Formula Grant of $150,000 under the Highway Planning and Construction program (CFDA 20.205) on May 29, 2025, to implement systemic safety improvements along State Route 501 (Lititz Pike) between Belmont Avenue and Golf Drive in Manheim Township, Lancaster County. This project represents a ranked priority corridor improvement based on network screening analysis conducted from 2016–2020. The award funds comprehensive countermeasures designed to enhance driver awareness and reduce collision rates at multiple intersection locations along the corridor.

The specific deliverables include advance signal signage at the signalized intersection of SR 0501 and Roseville Road—which experiences chronic rear-end crashes due to extended queuing—as well as sight distance improvements and updated signing and pavement markings at six stop-controlled intersections (Golf Drive, Susquaw Place, Overlook Avenue, Hess Boulevard/Murray Hill Drive, Belmont Avenue, and Roseville Road). These targeted safety countermeasures are intended to reduce driver hesitancy and confusion while mitigating both rear-end and angle collisions throughout the corridor. The project implements a systemic approach to address documented crash histories and intersection safety deficiencies across the identified segment.

Description

Project description
SR 0501 (lititz pike) from belmont avenue to golf drive manheim township safety improvements this is a systemic deployment of countermeasures aimed at appropriate intersections along the lititz pike corridor. This segment is ranked 3 on the lancaster county urban segment prioritization list based on 2016-2020 network screening. The signalized intersection of SR 0501 (lititz pike) and roseville road often experiences lengthy queuing beyond the existing signal ahead signage and has a history of rear-end crashes. The side street stop-controlled intersections at golf drive, susquaw place, overlook avenue, hess boulevard/murray hill drive, and belmont avenue also have crash histories and would benefit from intersection safety improvements. Potential improvements include advance signal signing, improved sight distance at intersections and major driveways, and signing/pavement marking improvements at stop-controlled intersections. The countermeasures are aimed at enhancing driver recognition and awareness of upcoming signalized intersections and associated queuing and updating signing/pavement markings to decrease driver hesitancy and confusion. Proposed countermeasures will improve intersection safety and reduce both rear-end and angle collisions along the corridor.
