About this award

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) awarded the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) $5.29 million through the Recreational Trails Program (CFDA 20.219) on September 18, 2025, for trail development, maintenance, and rehabilitation activities across Wisconsin through September 30, 2033. As a Formula Grant, these funds support the construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of recreational trails serving both motorized users (ATVs, UTVs, snowmobiles) and nonmotorized users (hikers, bikers, equestrians, cross-country skiers), along with associated trailside and trailhead facility improvements.

WisDOT distributed sub-awards to 17 county governments, municipalities, nonprofits, and private entities to execute specific trail projects. Key deliverables include replacement of deteriorated bridges on the Nicolet State Trail (Forest County), Wolf River State Trail (Forest County), and Corridor Trail 10/13 (Vilas County); rehabilitation and maintenance of existing trail systems (Lincoln County Underdown trails, Jackson County ATV trails, Oneida County near Lamer Springs Road); trail surface improvements including grading and limestone application (Brown County, Barron County); boardwalk replacement and ADA accessibility upgrades (Aldo Leopold Nature Center, Town of Bayfield); and ongoing seasonal maintenance operations including mowing, brushing, winter grooming, and erosion control (WinMan Trails Inc., Vilas County equestrian and ski trails, Beaver Creek Reserve, Wolf Run Association, Platteville Community Arboretum). All projects include eligible costs for archeological and historical investigations, with sub-recipients required to maintain improvements for 20 years.
