About this award

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) awarded $4.41 million to the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) under the Highway Planning and Construction program (CFDA 20.205) on September 5, 2025, for the replacement of the Kahawaiokapia Bridge along Hana Highway in Maui County. The project encompasses comprehensive bridge and roadway infrastructure work, including demolition of the existing bridge structure, footings, and abutment walls; construction of a new bridge with associated structural elements; installation of new asphalt concrete pavement and a 4-inch water system; and application of signing and striping. The project scope also includes the installation and subsequent removal of a temporary bypass road and bridge to maintain traffic flow during construction activities.

With an ultimate completion date of October 1, 2028, this formula grant award demonstrates the FHWA's continued investment in critical transportation infrastructure preservation across Hawaii's island communities. As a formula grant under the Federal-aid Highway Program, funding allocation reflects Hawaii's statutory entitlement under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, with project selection and administration occurring through established state-level transportation planning processes administered by HDOT in coordination with local authorities. The project deliverables will enhance public safety, connectivity, and economic activity across the island by replacing aging transportation infrastructure with modern, durable infrastructure assets.
