About this award

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) awarded $377,732.49 to the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities on July 25, 2025, under the Highway Planning and Construction program (CFDA 20.205). This Phase II grant supports continued development of Condition Dependent Performance Based Seismic Design (CD-PBSD) methodology, building on framework established in Phase I. The project delivers comprehensive research and analysis services including high-fidelity scanning of corroded reinforcement, analytical modeling to assess corrosion-induced structural imperfections, and correlation studies relating three-dimensional scan data to structural performance outcomes.

The grant funds eight primary deliverables: an updated literature review, refined scanning and assessment procedures, scanning and material testing activities, analytical modeling development, pit geometry and strain capacity correlation analysis, shake table testing to validate models, documentation of future phase implementation plans, and a comprehensive Phase II technical report. These products collectively advance understanding of how reinforcement corrosion affects seismic performance of structures, with work focused on establishing predictive models and testing protocols that will support field implementation in Phase III. The work is performed in Alaska and represents a strategic investment in transportation infrastructure resilience through improved seismic design methodologies.

Description

Project description
This project will use the frameworkdeveloped under phase ifor condition dependent performance based seismic design (CD-PBSD), to assess the impacts of corrosion through high-fidelity scansof corroded reinforcement; useanalytical models to assess the impacts of corrosion induced imperfections; develop a modelto relate information from 3D scans andmeasurements of corroded steelto structural performance; conduct shake tabletests to assess the accuracy of the models; and definethe details for the third phase of the work which will focuson field implementation. Tasks include: (1) literature review update; (2) refinement of scanning and assessment procedures; (3) scanning and material tests; (4) modeling; (5) RE-evaluation of PIT geometry and strain capacity correlation; (6) shake table tests; (7) future phase plans; (8) phase II report.
