About this award

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) awarded $419,765.50 to the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities on August 15, 2025, under the Highway Planning and Construction program (CFDA 20.205) to maintain a statewide network of Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) sites. The award supports the operation and maintenance of WIM equipment positioned on major transportation corridors throughout Alaska, including four sites in Anchorage (Glenn Highway MP 9, Tudor Road, Minnesota Drive, and Port of Anchorage Ocean Dock Road) and five additional sites located on the Glenn Highway, Steese Highway, Alaska Highway, Klondike Highway, and Sterling Highway. The WIM systems are critical infrastructure for collecting vehicle weight and traffic data on Alaska's major routes.

The funding covers vendor-supplied maintenance services, replacement parts, and remote monitoring operations necessary to ensure all WIM sites remain operational 24/7 throughout the funding period. This maintenance effort represents a coordinated initiative between the Alaska DOT&PF's Maintenance & Safety, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, and Project Delivery divisions. By sustaining these weigh stations, the award supports highway safety, enforcement of commercial vehicle regulations, and data collection for transportation planning and infrastructure management across Alaska's unique transportation network.
