About this award

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) awarded the District of Columbia Department of Public Works a formula grant of $821,280.00 under the Highway Planning and Construction program (CFDA 20.205) on September 12, 2025, for the design and construction of long-term remediation measures for the 27th Street Bridge over Broad Branch. The project addresses structural issues identified during routine asset management inspections, specifically differential settlement of the eastern abutment that has resulted in visible cracks in the approach pavement. The bridge, which was originally replaced and reconstructed in 2015 using a Glass Reinforced Soil Abutment (GRS-ABS) design—the first of its kind in the District—requires specialized rehabilitation to ensure continued structural integrity and safe operation.

The award will fund comprehensive engineering and construction services to resolve the settlement-related damage and restore the bridge to optimal condition. Work is anticipated to commence immediately following the award date, with an ultimate completion deadline of January 24, 2028. The scope includes design services and construction implementation for remediation measures that will address the underlying geotechnical issues contributing to the pavement deterioration, thereby extending the service life of this innovative infrastructure asset serving the Washington, D.C. transportation network.

Description

Project description
This project was replaced/reconstructed in 2015 with GRS-ABS type of bridge which was the first in its kind in the district. As per the routine inspection by ddot/asset management the eastern abutment was diferentially settled and as a result the approach pavement shows cracks which is visible from the top. Therefore, this project is to design and construct the long-term remediation measures for the bridge carrying 27TH street, NW over broad branch.
