About this award

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) awarded $2,153,000 in Highway Planning and Construction (CFDA 20.205) formula grant funding to the New York State Department of Transportation on May 22, 2025, for the Sheep Pasture Road over the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Bridge Replacement project (Phases 1-4) in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County. The project involves replacing an existing wooden bridge with a new steel and concrete structure that will accommodate future railroad expansion while improving road safety. Key deliverables include bridge reconstruction to accommodate a planned second track on the LIRR, increased bridge length, raised clearance to eliminate existing height restrictions over the tracks, and improved approach geometry at Bayview Avenue and Willis Avenue Extension to enhance sight distances and overall intersection safety. The project maintains current road capacity with no increase to traffic volume.

The funding structure reflects 95% federal support through the Highway Planning and Construction program, utilizing a 15% toll credit against the federal share and requiring a 5% local match contribution. This formula grant award supports New York State's comprehensive transportation infrastructure objectives under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) authorization, enabling the state DOT to execute a critical bridge safety and capacity project through phases one through four of development and construction.
