About this award

Federal Formula Grant Award Summary

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) awarded the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) $22.5 million on May 30, 2025, under the Highway Planning and Construction program (CFDA 20.205) to fund a grade separation infrastructure project in Barrington, Illinois. The project involves constructing an underpass to carry the Canadian National/Wisconsin Central Railroad over US Route 14 and reconstructing US 14 between Illinois Route 59 and Valencia Avenue. This critical infrastructure improvement will eliminate a railroad-highway at-grade crossing, enhancing safety and traffic flow in the region.

The funded work encompasses comprehensive roadway and utility improvements, including Portland cement concrete pavement construction, concrete retaining walls, precast noise walls, creek tributary relocation, and installation of associated stormwater, water main, and sanitary sewer systems. Additional project components include traffic signals, roadway lighting, erosion control measures, pavement markings, and signage. As a formula grant under the Federal-aid Highway Program authorized by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, this award reflects FHWA's support for state-administered transportation infrastructure projects that meet federal eligibility and environmental review requirements.
