About this award

The Federal Highway Administration awarded California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) a Formula Grant of $211,908.62 under the Highway Planning and Construction program (CFDA 20.205) on May 16, 2025. The grant funds infrastructure improvements on Interstate 105 in Los Angeles at the 105 to 405 connectors (postmiles 1.5R to 2.6R), specifically targeting three connector tunnels. The project deliverables include upgrading existing fluorescent and high pressure sodium (HPS) lighting fixtures to light emitting diode (LED) technology, modernizing lighting system control systems, replacing 13 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and associated hardware, and painting interior tunnel walls and ceilings white to enhance light reflection.

The project integrates transportation management infrastructure by connecting tunnel field elements to the fiber communication system at three regional hubs: the Los Angeles Regional Transportation Management Center on Route 2 (postmile 18.7), the Communication Hub Building on Route 5 (postmile 6.8), and the Los Angeles Airport Communication Hub Building on Route 105 (postmile R2.0). These improvements are designed to enhance visibility and safety within the tunnels while achieving energy efficiency gains and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions that align with federal regulatory requirements.
