About this award

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) awarded $199,850.00 to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on May 7, 2025, under the Highway Planning and Construction program (CFDA 20.205) to support the "My School in Motion 2025-2027" education initiative. This non-infrastructure project delivers year-round interactive pedestrian and bicycle safety education across three Lower Merion School District (LMSD) middle schools—Bala Cynwyd, Black Rock, and Welsh Valley—as well as two Neshaminy Area School District (NASD) middle schools and two elementary schools during the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic years.

The program provides comprehensive safety instruction that teaches students pedestrian and bicycle safety laws, offers practical opportunities to apply this knowledge, and engages students in identifying solutions to enhance walkability and bikeability at their schools. Program components include parent and teacher engagement initiatives, marketing and outreach, online resource information, onsite school events, and student-led walkability and bikeability audits. This educational approach addresses transportation safety priorities within the Highway Planning and Construction program's scope, which encompasses highway safety activities and bicycle and pedestrian projects as eligible funding categories outside traditional infrastructure construction.
