The Tolowa Dee-Ni' Nation received a $400,000 Formula Grant award from the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs Bureau of Justice Assistance under the Treatment Court Discretionary Grant Program (CFDA 16.585) to establish the Tolowa Dee-Ni' Juvenile Healing to Wellness Court from October 1, 2021 through September 30, 2026. The Wellness Court will address high rates of alcohol use and recidivism among non-violent juvenile offenders in the Tolowa Dee-Ni' area through an intensive, coordinated, and long-term approach incorporating culturally appropriate support services for tribal youth.

The tolowa DEE-NI' juvenile healing to wellness court will address the following inter-related problems: a high prevalence of alcohol use among tribal juveniles charged with crimes in the tolowa DEE-NI' area; the risk of recidivism among non-violent juvenile offenders and the potential escalation of their RE-offenses to violent crimes; the need for an intensive, coordinated and long-term approach to juvenile defendants charged in the tolowa tribal court; and, a need for more culturally-appropriate, community-based support for tribal youth who are often distanced from culture and community due to poverty, geographic isolation, or family or social dysfunction.
