Description

The programs are a forty-four-bed female intensive treatment unit and a sixty-five-bed male intensive treatment unit. The purpose of the project is to support and enhance the intensive treatment unit programs through the use of peer specialists. Primary activities include continued funding and utilization of three peer specialist positions within the intensive treatment unit programs. The peer specialists assist clients by finding resources, advising of processes, encouraging follow-through with resolutions, and locating social activities. They accompany individuals to meetings and community groups, advocate for their needs, and lead recovery dialogues and self-help sessions. Peer specialists foster the development of healthy relationships by encouraging participation in community activities, modeling effective coping and self-help techniques, providing advice on empowerment skills and successful community living, and providing information about community resources. The expected outcomes are to increase access to SUD treatment for wyoming department of corrections inmates with an assessed need, increase successful completion of SUD treatment, and decrease recidivism rates among this population. Despite being located in newcastle, the wyoming department of corrections rsat project serves all of wyoming, as inmates will be discharged to communities throughout the state.
