Description

The virgin islands bureau of corrections anticipates serving approximately 20 to 25 incarcerated individuals annually through residential substance use disorder treatment services, including both adult and juvenile populations during detention or incarceration. The program is designed to address substance use disorders and prepare participants for successful reintegration into the community upon release. Participants will receive treatment in designated residential treatment areas separate from the general correctional population in order to provide a therapeutic environment that supports recovery and rehabilitation. Reentry planning will be incorporated into each participant's individualized treatment plan to help ensure they are equipped with the tools, resources, and support needed for a successful transition back into the community. A central component of the program is the provision of comprehensive aftercare services following release from incarceration. The virgin islands bureau of corrections will implement best practices for community-based reentry by coordinating institutional treatment services with human service and rehabilitation programs, including educational assistance, vocational training, workforce development, and behavioral health services. The program will utilize evidence-based risk and needs assessments to identify participant needs and guide individualized treatment and reentry planning. Expected outcomes of the program include the establishment of a multidisciplinary reentry support team, expanded access to evidence-based treatment and recovery services, reduced recidivism among participants, improved public safety through reductions in community crime, strengthened parole and reentry supervision efforts, and enhanced participant readiness for reintegration.
