About this award
The Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Assistance awarded $235,253 to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety on October 1, 2025, under the Residential Substance Abuse Treatment for State Prisoners program (CFDA 16.593), a formula grant funding residential substance use disorder treatment for incarcerated populations during and after release.
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety, acting as state administrative agency, administers funding to the South Carolina Department of Corrections and qualifying county detention centers. The Department of Corrections operates two residential substance abuse treatment programs under the therapeutic community model: one for male youthful offenders and adult males, and one for females. Each program comprises a dedicated residential treatment unit segregated from general correctional populations. Participants undergo 6 to 12 months of treatment addressing substance use disorders while developing cognitive, behavioral, social, and vocational skills. The Department of Corrections coordinates post-release reintegration with the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole, and Pardon Services and local drug treatment agencies. County detention centers meeting program requirements operate jail-based pretrial substance use disorder treatment. The program aims to reduce crimes committed by released offenders through enhanced public safety.
Period of performance runs from October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2029. Place of performance is Blythewood, South Carolina.
