About this award

The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) awarded a $600,000 Formula Grant under the Comprehensive Forensic DNA Analysis Grant Program (CFDA 16.036) to the Attorney General of Wyoming's Division of Victim Services. This 2-year grant, effective from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2026, supports the Wyoming State Crime Laboratory (WSCL) in enhancing its DNA testing capabilities and capacity. Key objectives include reducing DNA processing backlogs, improving forensic analysis efficiency, and expanding CODIS entries to aid criminal investigations. Specifically, the grant funds analyst overtime, DNA analysis supplies, and upgrades to the laboratory's information management systems. This critical funding enables the WSCL, which is the sole forensic facility for local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in Wyoming, to process more DNA evidence and increase the state's DNA database.

Description

The wyoming state crime laboratory (wscl) is the only facility responsible for analyzing evidence associated with criminal investigations for local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, coroners offices, and public defender offices within the state of wyoming. Wyoming state statues 7-19-402 and 7-19-305 designate wscl as the agency responsible for conducting DNA analysis on samples collected from all convicted felony offenders and qualifying SEX offenders in the state of wyoming. The wscl is responsible for storing and maintaining the resultant profiles in the wyoming state DNA database. The federal funding from this award significantly improves the technology and capacity of the wscls DNA unit. This source also supports the entry of forensic casework and database samples into the federal bureau of investigations combined DNA index system (codis) by funding analyst overtime and supplies.
