About this award

The Utah Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice has received a $340,333 Formula Grant award under the U.S. Department of Justice's Residential Substance Abuse Treatment (RSAT) for State Prisoners Program (CFDA 16.593). The grant will support the development and implementation of evidence-based jail-based substance use disorder treatment programs across Utah, with a focus on serving individuals in rural and tribal areas. Key funded activities include:

  • Requiring RSAT program participants to adhere to the state's established standards for substance use disorder treatment, including certification requirements and provision of recovery/reentry support services.
  • Establishing written agreements between RSAT providers and local substance abuse authorities to ensure continuity of care and access to reintegration services upon an individual's release from jail.

The ultimate goal of this 4-year grant award, which began on October 1, 2023, is to increase access to and the effectiveness of substance use disorder treatment for incarcerated individuals in Utah, ultimately reducing substance abuse and recidivism within this population.
