About this award
The Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs Bureau of Justice Assistance awarded $871,091 under the Tribal Justice Systems federal grant program (CFDA 16.608) to the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. The funding will support increasing probation staffing on the 1.4 million acre Colville Reservation from three to five employees through September 2026. An additional two probation officers will allow for residential checks to be conducted across the four tribal districts, improving monitoring of the 96 probationers currently under warrant status. One administrative assistant will also be provided to ensure the probation office can accept walk-in appointments. The goals of this Formula Grant award are consistent with the Tribal Justice Systems program objectives of enhancing adult tribal justice systems and preventing violent and substance use related crime on tribal lands.
Description
The majority of other probationers (51% or 96 clients) are on warrant status due to failure to comply with the terms of their release. Currently there is not enough manpower to cover residential checks for all of the probationers across the entire 1.4 million acre reservation. When surveyed, participants were asked if they thought the probation office had enough employees to provide service to tribal members. Fifty-nine percent (59%) of the respondents said no, there were not enough probation employees to serve the reservation. Increasing the staffing by two more employees will create an office of five-one to cover each of the four tribal districts and one administrative assistant to stay within the office who can ensure the probation office is always open for walk-in appointments.
