Environmental Protection Agency Region 3 awarded the Maryland Department of the Environment $1.091 million on October 1, 2025, under the Leaking Underground Storage Tank Trust Fund Corrective Action Program (CFDA 66.805) to support the LUST corrective action program through September 30, 2028.
The award funds investigation of suspected petroleum releases from underground storage tanks, oversight and enforcement of corrective action by owners or operators, and direct corrective action activities. Where owners or operators are unknown, unwilling, or unable to perform cleanup, MDE performs cleanup work directly, initiates and completes remediation, and reduces the backlog of sites not yet cleaned up. The anticipated deliverable is state cleanup data entered into the LUST4 system, with the primary outcome being reduction in the backlog of UST releases awaiting completion.
The award obligates $1.091 million in federal cash. An additional $2.394 million in federal funds is contingent upon availability, which includes $202,446 in EPA in-kind contribution for a Science and Environmental Education employee at MDE. This action partially funds the grant; the source reflects a $60,600 obligation component of the overall award. No subawards are included in this assistance agreement. Place of performance is Baltimore, Maryland.
