About this award

The Department of the Army Corps of Engineers Engineering District Sacramento awarded a $685,748 Cooperative Agreement to the University of California, Davis on December 1, 2025, to study green sturgeon swimming performance in response to river substrate conditions through artificial fish passageways, with ultimate completion by November 30, 2027. The award is made under CFDA 12.005, Conservation and Rehabilitation of Natural Resources on Military Installations, and supports research that will inform flood risk management structure design and modifications. Work is performed in Davis, California. The research addresses critical information gaps in understanding green sturgeon movements and ecosystem health, with particular relevance to the Yurok and Hoopa Tribes, for whom green sturgeon hold cultural significance and serve as ecosystem indicators.

Description

Project tilted river substrate effect on green sturgeon swimming performance and implications for design of flood risk management structure.PI initiated cooperative agreement:this project will play a critical role in building the knowledge base for understanding green sturgeon movements in response to river substrate through artificial fish passageways that will fill critical information gaps and assist in flood risk management structure design and modifications. This information is important to the public as IT relates to biodiversity and overall ecosystem health. Furthermore, green sturgeon are ecosystem indicators and provide cultural significance to the yurok and hoopa tribes. Improvements in ecosystem health provide a direct benefit to the public via provisioning (e.g., food and water), cultural (e.g., recreation, education, and aesthetic), regulating (e.g., flood control), and supporting (e.g., nutrient cycling) services.
