The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) awarded a $423,500 Project Grant (CFDA 93.853 - Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders) to the Augusta University Research Institute, Inc. The objective is to develop and evaluate engineered exosomes carrying neuron-targeting peptides and a therapeutic protein (neuroglobin) for treating ischemic stroke. The research will: 1) characterize the engineered exosomes and assess their...
This Project Grant award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853) program provides $299,982 to Unandup, LLC to evaluate the safety and efficacy of their novel magnetic infusion platform for accelerating stroke thrombolysis. The platform is designed to overcome limitations of current thrombolytic treatments by rapidly delivering the clot-dissolving drug alteplase to...
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) awarded a 2-year, $423,500 Project Grant (CFDA 93.853 - Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders) to Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. The objective of this high-risk, high-reward research project is to investigate the use of remotely administered hypothermia (RAH) to the spleen as a novel neuroprotective therapy for ischemic stroke. The research aims to determine if suppressing splenic...
This $490,049 federal Project Grant award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853) will fund research by Shearit LLC to demonstrate the efficacy of their Lamiflo drug in reducing ischemic penumbra and core volumes and improving neurological recovery in a rodent model of acute ischemic stroke. The research aims to show that intravenous administration of Lamiflo, a...
The federal Project Grant award R01NS138410, with a total funding amount of $1,223,140.00, was provided by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853) grant program. The project aims to test a novel biopharmaceutical agent called Sanguinate that is designed to boost arterial collateralization and deliver oxygen to ischemic tissue in order to mitigate cerebral infarct...
This Project Grant award of $377,875.00 was provided by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853) federal grant program. The award, effective December 23, 2024 through November 30, 2029, will support research to develop engineered extracellular vesicles (EVs) that can co-deliver mitochondria and the therapeutic protein HSP27 to protect the blood-brain barrier and...
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) awarded a $492,749 Project Grant (CFDA 93.853 - Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders) to the University of Pittsburgh to develop a novel magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique called Ratiometric Dual (RDUAL) pH-Weighted MRI. This technique aims to enhance the ability to detect tissue acidosis in the ischemic penumbra and core during acute ischemic stroke, in order to better identify...
This $1,199,991 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program aims to develop novel technologies for real-time assessment of blood clot properties to improve stroke treatment. The key products and services under this grant include: Integration of a sub-millimeter Raman fiber probe into a catheter for intravascular, in-vivo measurement of clot chemical composition. Training of a convolutional neural network to...
This $666,530 federal Project Grant award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853) program, aims to develop an MRI-based technique to map the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen consumption (CMRO2) in acute ischemic stroke patients. The objective is to create an accessible method to evaluate ischemic lesion viability, as CMRO2 is a better predictor of reversible...
This Project Grant award of $498,995.00 from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853) federal grant program, supports the development of a highly parallelized interferometric near-infrared spectroscopy (INIRS) technology for the real-time, non-invasive measurement of cerebral blood flow (CBF). The project, led by Neuralenz, Inc., aims to create an integrated platform...

DODECAFLUOROPENTANE EMULSION (DDFPE), NANO2? AS CEREBROPROTECTANT IN ISCHEMIC STROKE - ABSTRACT / PROJECT SUMMARY STROKE AFFECTS MORE THAN 795,000 PATIENTS PER YEAR IN THE US AND KILLS APPROXIMATELY 40,000. LONG-TERM MEDICAL CARE EXPENSE FOR STROKE IN THE US, COSTS OVER $34B PER YEAR. LARGE VESSEL OCCLUSION (LVO) STROKE ACCOUNTS FOR ALMOST 40% OF ISCHEMIC STROKES BUT CAUSES 95% OF MORTALITY AND 62% OF LONG-TERM DEPENDENCE. MECHANICAL THROMBECTOMY (MT), OR A COMBINATION OF MT AND TPA, HAS EMERGED AS STANDARD OF CARE TREATMENT OF LVO STROKE. UP TO 60% OF THROMBECTOMY PATIENTS ARE FIRST EVALUATED AT SPOKE HOSPITALS AND TRANSFERRED TO HUB HOSPITALS FOR MT. `TIME IS BRAIN' FOLLOWING STROKE, THE SOONER THERAPY CAN BE INSTITUTED, THE GREATER THE LIKELIHOOD OF PRESERVING NEUROLOGICAL FUNCTION. A THERAPY THAT COULD BE RAPIDLY DEPLOYED IN ALL STROKE PATIENTS TO PRESERVE THE BRAIN COULD PROVIDE ENORMOUS POTENTIAL BENEFIT TO STROKE PATIENTS. NANO2TM (AKA DODECAFLUOROPENTANE EMULSION, DDFPE) SIGNIFICANTLY DECREASED STROKE VOLUME (SV), BY ABOUT 85%, AND IMPROVED NEUROLOGICAL ASSESSMENT SCORE (NAS) IN RABBITS WHEN ADMINISTERED IV UP TO 3 HOURS FOLLOWING STROKE AND ALSO IMPROVED SV AND NAS IN PERMANENT RAT MCAO. IN A RANDOMIZED, PLACEBO-CONTROLLED PHASE IB/II CLINICAL TRIAL OF ACUTE ISCHEMIC STROKE, IN WHICH PATIENTS RECEIVE STANDARD REPERFUSION THERAPY, NANO2 WAS SAFE AT ALL DOSE LEVELS. THE HIGHER DOSES OF NANO2 CAUSED SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER MODIFIED RANKIN SCALE (MRS) AT 30 AND 90-DAYS POST STROKE. EARLY ADMINISTRATION OF NANO2 (
