Description

Schools and families together: assessing the impact of get real: comprehensive SEX education that works (saft) - the schools and families together (saft) project will reduce teen pregnancy and STI transmission through the implementation of the get real: comprehensive SEX education that works (get real) high school curriculum. Get real is an 11-lesson, evidence-informed, inclusive, trauma-informed, and age-appropriate comprehensive SEX education curriculum with strong foundations in social and emotional learning and family engagement. As a result of receiving the get real intervention, students will show increase in their: confidence to demand use of condoms and other barrier methods; comfort talking with parents about SEX; comfort talking with a partner about pregnancy and stis; intention to use condoms and other STD prevention methods; intention to use birth control; and intentions to delay SEX (vaginal, oral, anal). These short-term outcomes will lead to longer-term outcomes of: delayed onset of vaginal, oral & anal SEX; increased use of condoms & other STI barrier methods; increased use of birth control; smaller increase in number of sexual partners; and especially for lgbtqia+ youth: increased communication with parents/trusted adults about SEX, relationships, gender, and sexual identity; and increased confidence to access sexual & reproductive health care. In order to reach these outcomes, planned parenthood league of massachusetts will partner with planned parenthood of greater ohio and wellesley centers for women to train a team of intervention facilitators to implement get real with 75 classrooms; survey 150 counterfactual (c) and intervention (TX) classrooms through pre-, post-, and follow up surveys; rigorously evaluate the intervention through a randomized control trial; create fact sheets to describe the intervention and evaluation; publish in peer-reviewed journals, and present findings at professional conferences.
