Description

The program will focus on developing a job-ready workforce with experience in using leading edge science and quantitative models to solve challenging water problems in california and the west. We propose a total of seven masters students or postdoctoral fellows that will work alongside reclamation scientists and managers to complete a training project of high value to reclamation. Trainees would be divided between an ecology track and an engineering track, but would collaborate between tracks in a structured way to enhance intellectual cross-pollination. Each trainee experience would also take part in a summer internship at reclamation. Here, each trainee would work in-person at a reclamation office during the summer, receiving hands-on job experience while also continuing the work initiated during the academic year. This experience will allow for professional networking opportunities, a chance to directly apply the results of their research project within the context of the existing management system, and will allow each trainee to gain a sense for the work environment at reclamation. Successful implementation of each trainees project at reclamation would net fast, cost-effective science that is innovative and multidisciplinary. IT would simultaneously, develop a workforce talent pipeline that would be job-ready and immediately available to reclamation upon graduation.2. Activities to be performed -a five-year project is proposed. The timeline consists of a soft year-one start involving one trainee during year-one. That number ramps to four trainees in year-two, five trainees in year-three, then declines to three trainees in year-four and concludes with one trainee in year-five. Each recruited trainee will be a member of a traditional lab and graduate group (e.g., ecology, civil and environmental engineering, hydrologic sciences) at UC davis, with one of the PIS of this agreement serving as a major advisor. At the discretion of reclamation, additional major advisors at UC davis can be used. Each trainee will participate in monthly meetings with cohort members, facilitated by an academic coordinator employed by the center. Reclamation collaborators will be invited to these meetings. Additionally, there will be two all-hands working group sessions each year hosted by the center for watershed sciences. All-hands meetings will involve all trainees, PIS, and engaged reclamation collaborators. These working group sessions will include break-out groups for each individual project, and report back presentations on team projects to the whole group. The academic coordinator will organize and facilitate the all-hands meetings.3. Expected deliverable or outcome - objective 1 - implement a training program for seven multidisciplinary trainees.objective 2 - develop actionable science products in collaboration with other trainees and reclamation managers.4. Intended beneficiary (IES)tools developed from this project will improve water management, as well as fish and wildlife conservation in the california BAY-delta watershed. This agreement will benefit the public by promoting effective use of water in the system, help prevent species extinctions, and provide scientific information for use in recovery efforts. The recipient can also further the mission of the university of california by helping train the next generation of scientists who will work to help improve scientific understanding and science-based management of public resources. 5. Subrecipient activities - there are no subrecipients for this agreement.
