Description

Snow water equivalent estimates from satellites have coarse resolutions and limited accuracy, and airborne methods have limited spatial and temporal coverage and can have high costs for ongoing monitoring. Recently, stationary cosmic RAY neutron sensors have been shown to accurately measure snow water equivalent at hourly to daily time steps with a footprint radius around 200 m. A cosmic RAY neutron rover can potentially be mounted on a vehicle to provide on demand snow water equivalent estimates at 670- m intervals over tens of kilometers in a few hours. The primary objective of this study is to demonstrate and evaluate the use of a cosmic RAY neutron rover for monitoring snow water equivalent. The study region will be the western SAN juan mountains in colorado. The cosmic RAY neutron rover approach will be evaluated by using a rover in a series of progressively more challenging tests. The potential benefits of using the rover measurements to enhance snow water equivalent monitoring will be quantified by comparing the snow water equivalent estimates from the rover to estimates from adjacent snow telemetry network sites and snow data assimilation system products. Technology transfer will be accomplished through partnerships with reclamation and the colorado basin river forecast center.
