Description

Excess salinity that which is greater than the standard set to protect beneficial uses poses a growing threat to food production and drinking water quality. Salts increase the cost of urban drinking water and wastewater treatment, which are paid for by residents and businesses. IT is anticipated that this project will result in the annual reduction of approximately 756 tons of salt in the colorado river at a cost-effectiveness value of $80.46 ton selected under the basin states salinity control program. The project is located in the lower gunnison river basin at the western end of the west ELK range. The fire mountain canal diverts from the north fork of the gunnison just below somerset, and supplies irrigation water to users from east of paonia to west of hotchkiss. Fire mountain canal is 32 miles in length, almost entirely an open earth lined canal. Water is supplied to the canal from direct diversions from the north fork of the gunnison river.
